Hey Guys! Pick up May’s issue of Maxim magazine and check out my latest story about students who make drugs in their dorm rooms. No one has ever covered this before.

What University are you talking about in Dorm Room Drug Lords from Maxim? I’m not a cop, I just think it would be a good place to visit and possibly matriculate. Please respond to my email. Thanks, Michelle.
Michelle,
I have to keep the university’s location secret to protect the identity of the students.
What state is this school in? Just curious, I went to a small LA school in rindge nh, but wish I had heard of this place as well! If I can ever figure out where it is, I just might have to visit for a good time! Sounds like this place has figured out what modern society has failed to!
Again, I can’t say. The students only talked to me on the condition I didn’t reveal their identities or the name of the college.
I’m not asking for Identities, location or name of school, just the state the school is in. Trying to get a geographic feel to possibly justify the looseness regarding drugs., maybe just give me a coast?
It’s a conservative part of the country. Not where you would expect. That’s all I’m gonna say.
I would love to visit this place. I wish this attitude would catch on in more places though. Legalize it and insist on education and safety before ever using anything. The world would be a much better place then I think.
just read the story. great job man! at first i was convinced it was reed college in oregon… but now you say its in a conservative part of the country…hmmm…
Good guess. But no.
Hello, my name is Chris and I’m a soon to be jr at Temple University. I just read Dorm Room Drug Lords of Higher Education and I loved it. I would just like to know if you have any advice for me as a writer who is looking to start doing some freelance work and how i could go about writing articles without having a set career.
Email me at with your cell number and I will call you back.
Sorry I haven’t gotten back you. Been real busy. Will call you next week.
Rad article. At first I wanted to know where this mythical university existed too, but am fully content that “psychedelic u” is an all-american, encompassing campus whose canvas stretches from sea to shining sea. I have met these characters for sure, even and especially at your local community college…
Thanks Gabriel. Actually, it is real university. I just can’t give out the location because I don’t want cops to bust the kids.
There isn’t just a SINGLE university where this happens. There are clandestine dorm room laboratories across the nation. I went to an Ivy League school were we did this. I also visited schools in Boston were friends did this too. Even in high school, lab chemicals would go missing. It’s better living through chemistry.
Your’e right Shane. I even heard stories about Christian campuses. But I had to choose one college to focus on.
Great read. If only I knew about this before going to undergrad…
where can I get a copy of this article online?
Great article, just read it. Could it be Evergreen College in WA?
No, it’s not Evergreen College. But that’s a good guess given the school has a long history of drug experimentation. I’ll post the article Monday morning just as the print edition is about to go off the newsstands. Stay tuned.
I’m almost positive I know what school it is, I hope to go there in the next 2 years. I’ve heard a lot about the place. Amazing article, seriously.
Thanks, TrueNirvana. If you do know the location, keep it to yourself.
How do we know that all this is even true if all the identifiable information is being withheld? Since the real names are not being used I don’t see how giving the name of the University would endanger the individuals mentioned in the article. I will refrain from guessing the name of the University because I am sure that even if do guess the correct University I will be told that I am not right.
You’re right. If you did guess the correct name I would tell you you’re wrong. The reason I don’t name the University is because it is a very small campus. The last thing I want is to get any of these kids busted. It is more important to me to protect these kids than to satisfy your curiosity.
So when people ask you to write an article (and this was a great article) are you required to back up your article with sources? Real live sources that people can fact check? I am interested in how certain journalistic pieces can be held accountable when the writer must keep all of its sources and a lot of its key information anonymous.
That’s a very good question, Roberto, and I’m sorry if I was a little short with you in regards to your previous post. All national magazines have fact checking departments. It’s nearly impossible to get anything through that isn’t 100% accurate. On the other hand, daily newspapers, including the NY Times, don’t fact-check. That’s why the NY Times prints corrections all the time. Weekly newspapers e.g. Village Voice used to have fact-checking departments but because of cost-cutting measures, no longer do. The worst offenders are book publishers. The dirty little secret of the book publishing industry is no book is ever fact-checked. That’s why James Frey’s “A Million Little Pieces” could be published even though it was bullshit from cover to cover.
I can assure you that the Maxim story was thoroughly vetted with everyone involved. Ask yourself this question: do any of the details in the story not ring true?
Sounds like Hampshire college! Of course there are others like it, but it reminds me of that one crazy weekend that I visited some friends there. Great article.
Thanks Joe,
It reminds a lot of people of a lot of different colleges.
Of course he wouldnt reveal the location as a “source”. Thats so stupid. Even if you say you are not a cop, saying the state or name of the university would completely endanger everything this article talks about. Im glad this story got out- it is really interesting and well written- but obviously the only way the story got out is because of its anonymity. great job!
Thanks a lot Alice. But don’t be too harsh on readers who want to know the location. With so many sleazy journalists who make up sources, it’s legitimate question. Unfortunately, it’s one I can’t answer without endangering the well-being of the students I interviewed.
What a great article! Its like as I was reading I could close my eyes and picture the whole scene and what its like there! Good stuff dude! Truly wish there was more like it. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Matt. It’s gratifying that so many readers appreciate my efforts.
Everyone is asking the obvious question, but not the important one. Frank, did you try any of the products for research purposes? I would imagine to be able to write about something with accuracy one would have to experience what they are writing about.
A drug person can learn to cope with things like seeing their dead grandmother crawling up your leg with a knife in her teeth, but nobody should be asked to handle this trip.
On another note, I really enjoyed the article. Have you done others for Maxim? What other mags do you write for, if any?
I also write for Playboy and have written two books “Clubland: The Fabulous Rise and Murderous Fall of Club Culture” and “No Speed Limit: The Highs and Lows of Meth”. Check out the rest of the website. There are many more articles to read.
Badass article i will soon check out your books
Thank you.
seriously what universitys is it? i would love to get there
Can’t say.
